Community invited to inspect the Territory's first specialist cancer care centre

An open invitation has been issued to Territorians to inspect the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre (AWCCC) and see the range of high level services now set-up in the NT.

The new, state of the art facility at Royal Darwin Hospital will open its doors to the public on Saturday 23 January from 10 am - 12 pm.

Chief Radiation Therapist Giam Kar of NT Radiation Oncology said it was a great opportunity for Territorians to see the new facility and understand the vital services it provides.

The Open Day is everyone's chance to tour the building and grounds before treatment of patients later in March.

Our knowledgeable team of AWCCC Staff will be on hand to answer any questions, Giam said. The AWCCC will provide access to top class cancer care to Territorians and around 300 patients will be treated in the first year.

The Centre features the latest Radiation Oncology technology and a fully equipped Haematology and Oncology Day Care Centre.

The AWCCC has been funded by the Australian Government and developed and delivered by the Northern Territory Government. The NTG will fund the annual operating cost of the facility.The $28 million facility was officially opened by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Friday 22 January.

It will be staffed by a team of 20 including oncology specialists, doctors, physicists, radiation therapists, engineer, nurses and support staff from NT Radiation Oncology and the Royal Darwin Hospital. AWCCC will also have access to the professional support from the Royal Adelaide Hospital Cancer Centre.

The Centre also has other home grown features paintings by local Larrakia artist Joseph Raymond have been installed at the AWCCC.

AWCCC is located on the Royal Darwin Hospital campus on Burnett Road.

To access the Centre, enter RDH Campus off Rocklands Drive onto Florey Avenue and drive to the end of Florey Avenue to enter the AWCCC car park on Burnett Avenue.
